pregnancy Massage

May 30- June 1 / Friday 6 - 9, Sat, Sun 9 - 5:30 / 18 hrs / $360+$25 text & supplies + gst.
Pre-requisites: Spa Therapy Diploma or equivalent.


This 18-hour course covers massage for healthy expecting mothers, appropriate for the spa environment. The course will include an anatomy, physiology and contraindication review as well as massage techniques appropriate for each trimester, labour and post-partum.

Instructor: Paula Jaspar

Paula is a Registered Massage Therapist and a member of the College of Massage Therapist of BC, the Massage Therapy Association of BC, Doulas of North America, and Doula Services Association of BC. Paula is focused on teaching manual skills, clinical assessment, pregnancy, labour and pediatric massage and has a private practice in Vancouver.

shiatsu

Level I: July 7 - 11 / 10 - 5 / 30 hrs / $525 tuition + $40 text & supplies + gst.
Pre-requisites: None.


This course is an introduction to Shiatsu - oriental acupressure massage that integrates the philosophy of Eastern Medicine with Western anatomy and physiology. Participants will master a basic Shiatsu treatment, using palm and thumb pressure, in the prone and supine positions.

Level II: July 14 - 18 / 10 - 5 / 30 hrs / $525 tuition + $40 text & supplies + gst.
Pre-requisites: Shiatsu Level I.


This course is a continuation of Shiatsu I. Participants will learn a full Shiatsu treatment including advanced techniques such as arm and elbow pressure, specific meridian stretches, and side-lying position. There will be further discussion of the Meridian System and specific points.

These are the first 2 of the 5 modules that make up the 150-hour Shiatsu Program. A certificate is issued for every module. Take one or take them all!

Instructor, Fernando Cabrera

Fernando is a Registered Shiatsu Therapist and has been practicing Zen Shiatsu (Masunga style) since 1992 and is a member of the Shiatsu Therapy Association of B.C. He has taught Shiatsu Therapy at Langara College and now leads his own Shiatsu workshops. Fernando's unique style also combines techniques drawn from traditional Thai Massage and Chi Nei Tsang (international organ massage).

Hawaiian Lomi Lomi

Level I and II: July 21 - 24 / 8:30 - 5:30 / 32 hrs / $600 US before June 1, $650 US after June 1.
Pre-requisites: None.


Participants will learn a complete system of hands-on healing based on flowing forearm techniques and sacred touch that integrates both physical and energetic work. In addition participants journey through exercises in conscious stretching, presence, intimacy, shamanic principles and movement.

Instructor, Tom Cochran and Donna Jason

Tom is a master practitioner of Hawaiian Temple Bodywork. He has an extensive background in Hawaiian shamanism, yoga, dreamwork, movement, energy work, meditation, massage and group facilitation. Since 1991, Tom has traveled worldwide teaching and offering sessions in Europe, Japan, Canada, Hawaii and across the States.

Donna is an actress, writer, and teacher committed to the transformational power of the creative arts. She has an extensive background in theatre, dance, creative visualization and healing through the emotional body.

Thai Yoga Massage

Thai Taster: Friday, Friday, June 6 / 6 - 9 / 3 hours/ $65 + gst.
Pre-requisites: None.


In this 3-hour "taster" students are introduced to the practice of Thai Yoga Massage. Through demonstration and hands-on practice participants will gain first hand experience both giving and receiving a 20-minute Thai Yoga Massage. This is an invaluable introduction for those wishing to learn more and perhaps go on to study further with Levels I and II.

 

Level I: August 11 - 15, 2008 / 10 - 5 / 30 hours / $525 + $10 text fee + gst
Pre-requisites: None.


In this class students learn how to perform a complete 90-minute Thai Yoga Massage session. Learn to incorporate the fundamentals of effortless, flowing transitions between postures while maintaining proper body alignment & stances that create a mutually beneficial massage for practitioner & recipient. The history and philosophy of Thai Yoga Massage will also be discussed.

 

Level II: August 25 - 29, 2008 / 10 - 5 / 30 hours / $525 + $10 text fee + gst
Pre-requisites: Thai Yoga Massage Level I.


This advanced course builds on the foundations of Thai Yoga Massage 1 and teaches you new postures and case studies in order to customize the massage for a more profound therapeutic effect.

 

Instructor, Mia Blackwell

Mia Blackwell is a Lotus Palm teacher with over 20 years of experience. She has a background in Shiatsu, Yoga, Pranic Healing, and Meditation. When she discovered Thai Massage she instantly fell in love with this healing art and has dedicated her life to the study and practice. Mia has studied Thai Massage in Thailand, Chicago, and with Lotus Palm in Montreal.

Ayurveda

Level I: July 2 - 4 / 9 - 5:30 / 24 hrs / $450 tuition + $75 text & supplies + gst.
Pre-requisites: None.


Ayurveda, the Science of Life, is an ancient system of holistic health and medicine from India that is still used today and is gaining popularity in North America. Ayurveda is both preventative and curative, emphasizing the knowledge of self-healing and individual balance. This course is an introduction to the principles of Ayurveda, the doshas, and Ayurvedic substances. Students will learn several treatments that are common spa applications including Swedana, Shirodhara, and Abhyunga.

 

Level II: August 18 - 19 / 9 - 5:30 / 18 hrs / $300 tuition + $50 text & supplies + gst.
Pre-requisites: Spa Therapy Diploma, Level I or equivalent.


This 15 -hour course builds on the content of Ayurveda Level I with further exploration and skill refining in the following areas: the sub-doshas and prakriti, plant substances and powders, Ayurvedic nutrition and detoxification, marma points, abhyunga and shirodhara. Each student will receive a full treatment including shirodhara during the training.

Instructor, Colleen Fraser

Colleen is a Whistler based Register Massage Therapist and teacher of ancient ayurvedic texts. She is a graduate of the West Coast College of Massage Therapy and the Ayurvedic Institute and continues her self study of over 20 years. Colleen is the director of education and training for Vida Wellness Spas, and originally the co-founder of the spa.

Deep Tissue Massage

Advanced Techniques and Strategies for Shoulders and Neck
Sept 27 - 28 / 10 –5 / 12 hours / $250 tuition + $10 text & supplies + gst
Pre-requisites: An introductory course in Deep Tissue Massage.


The main focus of this seminar is the presentation of advanced Deep Tissue Massage techniques and strategies for working with the shoulder girdle and the neck. The basic concepts and strokes for addressing these body parts will be reviewed and refined.The seminar will include a discussion about the "Forward Head Posture" as well as advanced Joint Release techniques for the shoulders and the neck.

Instructor, Amaro Hogräfer

Amaro has worked for thirty years with individuals and groups in the field of bodywork. His qualifications include certifications in Rolfing®, The Trager® Approach and the Dorn® Chiropractic Method as well as a diploma in Naturopathy. He is the co-founder of the "European School of Bodywork" and has developed a two year training program in deep tissue bodywork. He has taught Joint Release Workshops to various professional groups including naturopaths, midwives and massage therapists.
